Lesson Goal
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to explain the process of inhalation and exhalation in the human respiratory system, identifying the major structures involved and describing how air moves into and out of the lungs.
Rationale
This lesson introduces learners to the structure and function of the human respiratory system, building on their prior knowledge from primary science about the importance of air for life. Understanding how breathing works is essential for learners to make informed decisions about their health, recognise signs of respiratory illness, and appreciate the impact of air quality on their lungs — issues directly relevant to their daily lives in both rural and urban Zambian communities. Through guided inquiry, group discussion, and hands-on activities focused on the intake of air, this lesson develops learners' Critical Thinking, Analytical Thinking, and Communication skills by requiring them to observe, question, and articulate the mechanisms of breathing in a learner-centred environment.
Prior Knowledge / Prerequisite Knowledge
Learners at Form 1 level already know from primary school science that humans breathe air through the nose and mouth, that the lungs are the organs for breathing, and that air contains oxygen which the body needs to live. They have also observed their own breathing rate changing during exercise and rest. This prior knowledge will be activated at the start of the lesson through a guided breathing observation activity and targeted oral questions, creating a direct bridge to the new content on the detailed pathway of air and the mechanical process of inhalation and exhalation.
Learning Environment
- Natural Environment: The teacher will draw on the local Zambian context by asking learners to recall times when they have felt short of breath — for example, after running in the school playground, climbing a hill near their village, or during a football match. The teacher will also reference the visible dust during the dry season or smoke from cooking fires as examples of air quality that affects breathing, making the content immediately relevant to learners' lived experiences.
- Artificial Environment: The classroom is arranged in mixed groups of 4–6 learners, with desks pushed together to form group tables that allow face-to-face discussion and collaborative work. A large flip-chart displaying a simplified, hand-drawn diagram of the human respiratory system (showing the nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs) is mounted on the wall beside the chalkboard. Three smaller charts showing (a) the pathway of air, (b) the diaphragm movement during inhalation and exhalation, and (c) a labelled cross-section of an alveolus are also displayed. The chalkboard is reserved for teacher notes, key vocabulary, and worked examples during the EXPLAIN and ELABORATE phases.
- Technological Environment: The teacher will use a single laptop connected to a small portable speaker to play a 90-second audio clip of slow, deep breathing sounds during the ENGAGE phase to focus learners' attention on the act of breathing. If a projector is available, a short animated GIF showing the movement of the diaphragm and rib cage during inhalation and exhalation will be shown during the EXPLAIN phase. In the absence of a projector, the teacher will use a large hand-drawn flip-chart of the same animation in sequential frames.

During the ELABORATE phase, learners discuss how poor air quality from dust, smoke, or pollution can damage the respiratory system, linking directly to common health challenges in Zambian communities such as respiratory infections and asthma. Learners are taught to recognise signs of breathing difficulty and the importance of seeking medical help.
- Environmental Health and Pollution Management: During the ELABORATE phase, learners analyse a real-life Zambian scenario: a family living near a busy road or a charcoal-burning area. They apply their understanding of the respiratory system to explain how inhaling polluted air affects the lungs and alveoli. This raises awareness about the importance of clean air, tree planting, and reducing indoor smoke exposure — directly connecting the lesson to environmental health issues relevant to learners' homes and communities.
