Lesson Goal

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to identify natural resources in their urban community in Zambia and explain at least two sustainable management practices for each identified resource.

Rationale

This lesson builds on learners’ prior knowledge of the environment and common elements within it, extending their understanding to the classification and sustainable management of natural resources in an urban Zambian context. The content is vital for developing responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship, as learners will see how everyday choices about water, trees, and land directly affect their community’s well-being and future. Through active, learner-centred methods including guided discovery, collaborative group work, and independent reflection, this lesson develops the general competences of Environmental Sustainability, Citizenship, and Critical Thinking as learners identify resources, evaluate management practices, and propose solutions to real local challenges.

Prior Knowledge / Prerequisite Knowledge

Grade 4 learners already know that the environment consists of living and non-living things, and they can name common elements such as water, soil, plants, and animals from previous Grade 3 topics on "Our Environment." They also understand basic concepts of care and responsibility for shared spaces from earlier lessons on "Caring for the School Environment." This prior knowledge will be activated at the start of the lesson through two oral questions that prompt learners to recall what they already know about things found in their neighbourhood and how they use water and trees at home, creating a direct bridge to the new content on identifying and managing natural resources sustainably.
